Making A Name For Oneself And Starting A Family Is Difficult,

Making a name for oneself and starting a family is difficult, but it is even more arduous when it is in a completely new country with citizens who judge newcomers based on racial differences. In the face of such adversity, Joseph and Mary Tape swiftly assimilated themselves and their family into American society; in a time of intense political tension for Chinese immigration, they utilized their abilities to survive. By embracing their assimilation and connecting into their ever expanding prestige as middle-class Chinese Americans, the Tapes were able to act as ethnic and cultural brokers between the Chinese and American society. The largest city in the state for a long time, San Francisco brought together everyone who came to California for a better life; one of the largest groups of people to arrive were Chinese immigrants. The large influx garnered much tension between former gold miners and other new residents of state. It was during this time, in the mid 1870s and 1880s, that Joseph Tape began his business ventures in goods transport. His work led to extensive networking within the growing Chinese community in San Francisco and his skills garnered him attention as a broker between American and Chinese cultures. Mary Tape, on the other hand, approached assimilation in a way differing to her husband. Unlike Joseph, Mary was more inclined to assimilate to â€Å"Americanness† and didn’t relate as closely to Chinatown and Chinese immigrants. Part of her staunch disassociation with her Chinese heritage had to do with the sex trafficking she may have been exposed to in China, and possibly how she arrived in California. Culturally, the Tapes didn’t fit in neatly with either the white American soci ety or the Chinese immigrant community because Joseph and Mary virtually discarded their Chinese culture to fit in.
